Athletic Bilbao hosts Barcelona at the San Mames Barria in a match from the second round of La Liga

Athletic Bilbao hosts Barcelona at the San Mames Barria in a match from the second round of La Liga. This is a postponed game from the beginning of the season which is going to be played now. This is a chance for Barca to move closer to top, but it won’t be easy for them.

Barcelona are currently sitting 5th in the La Liga standings with 28 points, trailing on 10 points behind the current leader Atletico Madrid. For Los Cules it’s important to win on Wednesday because this would move them to third place in the standings and it will decrease Atletico’s advantage on top.

On Sunday Barca needed just one goal to win against Huesca. Lionel Messi provided the assist while Frenkie De Jong scored the winner at the Estadio El Alcoraz. Some might say that Barcelona didn’t shine in this one, but they got what they needed – the three points.

The French star Antoine Griezmann was rested by the manager Ronald Koeman and he played just 9 minutes against Huesca. Most likely Griezmann will start on Wednesday.

Athletic Bilbao sit on 9th place in La Liga with 21 points won so far. For the Basques this game is an opportunity to overtake Celta at 8th place and move up in the table.

Athletic also won their last game in the Spanish league. Gaizka Garitano’s boys hosted Elche and celebrated a 1-0 win at the San Mames Barria. Iker Muniain scored the winner after 25 minutes of playing. Oscar De Marcos provided the key assist.

That’s our preview for the La Liga game between Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona on Wednesday. For Barca it’s never easy to play at the San Mames Barria, but they must give 100 percent if they want something more from this season. This is a key fixture for the manager Ronald Koeman and his players.
